Why importing costs more than the US price

We want the cost of importing from the USA to be completely transparent. American retail prices can look attractive online, but a number of unavoidable charges and specialist processes sit between the US seller and delivery in the UK.

Costs throughout the journey

For most imports—especially regulated or specialist items—the final price can include US domestic delivery, international courier charges, export handling, customs processing, import duty, insurance, currency-conversion costs, VAT and UK clearance charges.

Shipping can be surprisingly expensive even for a small item. The calculator therefore includes the standard $15 US domestic-delivery allowance automatically; enter only the advertised product price.

Administration and compliance

There is also significant work behind the scenes. We manage supplier liaison, export checks, customs paperwork, import declarations, secure handling and the coordination needed to move products legally and safely from the USA to the UK.

Why the difference is not simply our profit

Using an illustrative exchange rate of $1.3000 to £1, the estimated landed cost is about £66.13. The final £105 customer price contains £17.50 VAT, leaving an estimated gross margin of about £21.37 before staff time, administration, payment costs and other business overheads. Most of the difference from the $50 advertised price is product cost, handling, transport, import charges and tax—not margin.
